CBT Newtownabbey

When we are closely involved in the intricacies of everyday life situations, we are sometimes unable to make realistic judgements about our circumstances. A normal daily routine can sometimes become a problem. This is because we begin to place difficult expectations upon ourselves and other people around us, and we do this very subtly, in a way which is virtually un-noticeable. In some cases people actually develop the medical symptoms of stress, (eg. stomach ulcers, irritable bowel, headaches etc). Even with this actual evidence of stress, they ponder as to the cause. And of course, over time these medical symptoms of stress themselves become triggers for even more worrying and fretting........

The first step on the road to control is to identify the actual physiological mechanisms whereby these symptoms are connected to a persons thought processes.

After this we look at muscle loosening exercises to target those areas which are particularly tense. These are NOT just relaxation exercises; they are specifically designed to LOOSEN those muscles which remain almost permanently taut to the point of discomfort. These areas of tension often contribute to the feeling of being stressed, and serve to keep the individual in a state of heightened alertness / arousal. Furthermore, the expenditure of energy involved in this inadvertent use of muscles, slowly drains the person of their vitality, leading to fatigue and loss of interest in everyday activities.

Also, cycles of behaviour which contribute to the problem, must be addressed; these cycles are very often self-defeating.

Once individuals are aware of the exact nature of the problem and what is keeping it going, it may be possible to put in place alternative strategies, which may be more beneficial........
