CBT Newtownabbey

Suddenly your heart starts to pump heavily, your stomach heaves, and your skin dampens with sweat.......it's happened a thousand times before and no matter what you do, you can't stop it; and furthermore you can't understand it, because you know it's not rational.........

And of course the longer the problem persists, the more likely it is to dent your confidence, and drag down your mood.

People with phobias often pick up environmental cues which trigger their fear. Because of the intensely distressing nature of their phobia they often seek out potentially threatening situations (so that they can avoid them). Of course the result is that they actually find more!! The outcome for many people with phobias is that they tend to believe that the threat is more common than it actually is. This is an example of a biased thought process, and it develops in a very subtle way, largely unseen by the person. Our programme assists you to become aware of the many ways that threats can become magnified, whilst your sense of control is minimised. Overcoming the problem starts with looking at the assumptions people have, and re-evaluating the level of threat, so that it is closer to reality. This is followed by practicing ways of managing the “fear reaction” to reduce the distress.......
